Earth Day Take-Over Tooting

A brand new project created with young people in Tooting.

Young people across Tooting are invited to take part in an exciting new arts project – The Earth Day Take-Over.  The project is supported by The National Archives and will provide young people with an opportunity to reflect and document our changing relationship with the natural world. Working with artists from Bounce Theatre and Make Spaces Tooting they will co-create an art exhibition that uses empty spaces, outdoor spaces, and donated spaces to form a pop up gallery. This will be interspersed with performance and audio recording to champion young people’s voices about the spaces they inhabit on Earth Day 2021.

The National Archives Education team said of the project “The National Archives Education team are really excited to be supporting the Earth Day Takeover project in Tooting. The National Archives has a wonderful collection of documents that showcase people’s perceptions of the natural environment in the past, and we’re thrilled that these images will be used by the young people to inspire their creative responses for this project.”

The project has been further supported by The Trident Centre who are providing a Covid-secure space for young people to work from. Workshops run on Wednesdays from 4-6pm and are free to participate in. Places are limited to comply with social distancing. However, the artists are running a digital project alongside it for young people who can connect via Zoom. This will include podcasting and devising audio stories. Young people without digital access will always be given an opportunity to join the project at the Trident Centre.

Any local businesses that would like to support the project & donate a space for exhibition is also welcome to get in touch. The exhibition will launch in April 2020.
