Bounce Theatre Partners with Speech Bubbles for Special Education Research Project

Bounce Theatre is thrilled to announce its involvement in a pioneering research project with Speech Bubbles, supported by the Portal Trust, to explore how the Speech Bubbles drama-for-communication model can be adapted for Special Education settings.

Since 2009, Speech Bubbles has been transforming communication outcomes for Key Stage 1 children (aged 5-7) struggling in mainstream classrooms. Currently running in 60 schools nationwide, the programme enhances speaking, listening, social interaction, and wellbeing through drama and theatre-making approaches.

Building on a history of adaptations for Special Education, this initiative will refine and expand the programme to better meet the needs of pupils with additional learning requirements. A key part of the project includes developing specialised training for drama practitioners to deliver impactful sessions in Special Education settings. As part of the initiative, Bounce Theatre will facilitate 18 weeks of Speech Bubbles sessions at the ASC base at Riversdale School throughout Spring and Summer 2025. Sessions will support communication by encouraging children's self-expression through the drama. We will create stories from children's fictional or real life stories, interests and likes to support communication, confidence and creativity.

Louise Pendry, Artistic Director and Founder of Bounce Theatre commented, "Celebrating diverse ways of communicating is something I hold close to my heart, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful project."

In addition to these sessions, staff from the School will engage in professional development, including a tailored CPD session on drama tools for communication. The programme will culminate in an evaluation session in July 2025, ensuring feedback is integrated into future developments. Bounce Theatre is proud to be part of this transformative research, fostering inclusive arts education and empowering children to find their voices through creative expression.
