When: October 2022 – July 2023
Where: Various locations across Tooting
Who for: Anyone age 7 – 70+ years old
Our Partners: – Meet & Make Spaces – Tooting Market – Smallwood School & Language Centre – Fircroft School
“You can walk down the street without realising the windows of textile shops are stocked with hand-picked fabrics from around the globe.”
Threads of Tooting weaves together the story of the tailors, makers, and textile businesses housed in Tooting since the 1920s. Using interviews, research, and site visits, local people will create and curate a series of events to celebrate Tooting’s relationship with tailoring and textiles.
Creative Learning Opportunities include:
Make Do & Mend Club
An after school club at Smallwood Primary School championing how the Make Do and Mend era can inform how we think about fashion and our environment.
Pop-Up Museum
Children at Fircroft Primary School will design and curate a pop up exhibition celebrating textiles and migration in Tooting.
Adult Learning
Our collaborators, Meet and Make Spaces, are hosting art classes for adults to use heritage to tell stories about the local community. This will culminate in a mural painted alongside a ghost sign depicting textiles heritage on the High Street.
